Psychological Impact of Trauma
The impact of trauma can have far reaching implications. Feelings of hopelessness or helplessness are common themes for those emotionally rejected or abandoned by ones parent(s) or physically and sexually abused.
Children’s responses to trauma will be influenced by their learned resiliency, developmental level and support system(s). These factors are significant in determining who will develop difficulties. Common symptoms of trauma include anger, fear, depression and frequent mood changes. Fearful memories are stored in the brain differently than non traumatic memories. Therefore, some children may experience similar psychological fear reactions when exposed to reminders of the incident(s).
